“Zombies are stupid monsters,” Paul said to me as he kicked a pebble into a gutter.

“Yeah, but they’re just a manifestation of our fears around immigration, disease, otherness and all that stuff,” I say.

“True,” Paul says, picking through a trash can. He pulls out a three bags of slightly moldy bagels and grins like he caught a big mouth bass as he stuffs them into his backpack.

We note the spray painted writing on a large piece of plywood nailed to the main doors of a burned out apartment building:

Dead Here, Keep Going.

“Yeah, zombies are stupid monsters, who thought it was a good idea to create them. We could’ve had vampires.”

“Yep, that would’ve been cool,” I say.

Weekend Writing Warriors: #8Sunday

Welcome back to the Weekend Writing Warriors challenge! I was sick last week, so I didn’t get a chance to write, but I’m happy you’re back to check it out. The Weekend Writing Warriors challenge is to write a story or excerpt from a story you’ve been working on in 8-10 sentences. Take the time to check out other writers at the link above!

It’s only Noon on Friday, and my head is pounding. I slug down another can of Jolt and try to focus on the excel document in front of me. Names, emails, ages, addresses; common identifiers for the Company to find the perfect clients to commit the perfect crimes.

Crimes are lucrative these days after the economic crash of 2018. These clients are lining up to commit anything from larceny to murder–for the right amount of cash or credit or hell, dinner.

I got lucky when the crash hit, my boss hired me to take out the CEO of the Company. I did a two for one–him and the CEO–best payoff ever. America is the greatest country on earth.
