Welcome to the Weekend Writing Warriors challenge. The challenge is to write a story or excerpt from a story you’ve been working on in 8-10 sentences. Take the time to check out other writers at the link above!

“You can do it, Haley, they all play their part but you need to quiet them,” Dr. Speed says as she adjusts the meter monitoring Haley’s brain waves through the cotton patches attached to her temples.

Strapped to a large gurney, Haley tries to relax, tries to calm the voices raging in her head. She tries to parcel them out: the needies, the agitators, the ragers or the helpers.

“They’re quiet now,” Haley says, she imagines her voices all neatly in a row, in their seats like her 5th-grade classroom a year ago, but that was in the before and she tries hard not to think about the before.

“Go ahead, Haley,” Dr. Speed says, as she adjusts buttons and knobs ultimately pushing the lever which reveals the inmate behind the glass strapped to a similar gurney.

Haley nods and focuses her thoughts on the inmate, she giggles when he squirms as his body immolates in seconds.

“That was wonderful, Haley,” Dr. Speed claps her hands and pats Haley on her head.

You can do the doctor next, an agitator whispers. Haley smiles sweetly and nods.

I’ve done a few of these before so feel free to roam the dcedwards.com site for other excerpts.

Also, if you want to check out my completed novel, Bright City, it’s available on Amazon.

  1. Wait. Immolate means burning up, right? She caused the other inmate to spontaneously combust? Holy cow. And now the voice(s) is telling her to do the doctor? What is this girl?
